Whose house is it?

Every clearance starts with a different story. Find yours, and the quote starts from there.

Nothing leaves until it has been sorted

Every home divides four ways. This is how we go through yours.

  1. Ornaments, tins and china from a home, sorted and set out on a table

    1 of 4

    Kept for you

Photographs, paperwork, jewellery, and anything you asked us to look out for.

Put safely to one side for you to collect.

  2. A wooden shelving unit and a leather armchair in a living room

    2 of 4

    Passed on

Furniture, homeware and essentials that are clean, safe and in good condition.

Passed on to be used again, wherever we can. How we reuse

  3. A garage workbench crowded with tools, tins and metal fittings

    3 of 4

    Recycled

Metal, wood, textiles and other materials that can be used again.

    Separated and recycled responsibly.

  4. A cleared room with bare floorboards

    4 of 4

    Disposed of properly

Only what cannot be reused or recycled.

Taken to a licensed site. Never dumped or burned.

You stay in charge. Say no to anything being passed on, or ask for particular things to be passed on, and that is what we do.

What a house clearance costs

Clearances start from £250. After that it depends on what is in the house rather than the size of it, so every job is quoted individually. Your price comes after a few photos or a short visit, and it is free to ask.

What your quote is based on

  • The amount to clearWhat is in the house, not the size of it.
  • AccessHow easy it is to get things out to the van.
  • LabourThe time it takes, and how many of us it needs.
  • DisposalWhat it costs to recycle or dispose of properly.

Sorting, reuse, recycling and disposal are included.

What costs a little extra

Fridges and freezers, TVs and monitors, mattresses, upholstered sofas and chairs, and paint, oil or chemicals. Each needs special disposal. I point them out before the job. No hidden fees.

What brings it down

Good things that can be used again. If the house has furniture or homeware we can pass on, I tell you and take it off the quote.

Reuse comes first

Useful things are passed on and kept out of landfill wherever we can.

The good things get used again

Furniture, homeware and essentials that are clean, safe and in good condition are not treated as waste. We sort them out ourselves on every clearance and pass them on to be used again wherever we can, so as little as possible ends up in landfill.

It costs you nothing extra, and it is your choice. Say no, or tell us which things you would most like to see used again.

“I started Vernons because I wanted to offer something a bit different from the usual clearance service. A lot of the work I do is for people dealing with bereavement, downsizing, family homes or difficult circumstances. So I wanted it to feel approachable, respectful and personal, rather than just turning up, throwing everything in a van and treating it all as rubbish.”

More about us

Questions people ask first

Not here? Add it to your quote request.

Do I need to sort or pack anything before you come?

No. We sort everything in the house ourselves into four groups: to keep, to pass on, to recycle and to dispose of. You don't need to lift anything.

How soon can you start?

Usually within a few days of your quote, and sometimes sooner if we are already working in your area. We fit around the dates that suit you.

What happens to the things you take?

Useful things in good condition are passed on to be used again wherever we can, so they stay out of landfill. What can't be reused is recycled, and only what is left goes to a licensed waste site.

Will there be extra charges?

Only for a few items that need special disposal: fridges and freezers, TVs and monitors, mattresses, upholstered sofas and chairs, and paint, oil or chemicals. I point them out before the job, so there are no hidden fees.

How do you handle a clearance after a bereavement?

Quietly and with respect. Personal and sentimental things are kept safe for the family, and we can deal directly with the solicitor or estate agent if that is easier for you.
